Writer's picture: Gees ArenaGees Arena

On August 2nd, 1997, Charles G. Taylor was inaugurated as Liberia's 21st President after he won a landslide victory of 75.3% of the total votes in a special elections of proportional representation, held under the auspices, and sponsorship of ECOWAS on July 19, 1997.

The Special Elections was held as a result of a Peace Plan agreed upon by parties, and stakeholders in the Liberian civil crisis which was brokered in the Nigerian Capitol, Abuja in 1996 by ECOWAS after dozens of peace conferences aimed at finding a lasting solution yielded no earlier fruitful results.

The Plan gave birth to a novel electoral concept of "proportional representation" which highlighted what was referred to as "a level playing field" for all stakeholders, and political parties that were in contestation for the presidency and other elected offices.

In the finale, Charles Taylor of the NPP won by a landslide margin of 75.3% of the total votes; followed by Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of the UP who garnered 9.5%, and Alhaji Kromah of ALCOP with 4.3% amongst the 13 political parties that were in the race.
